You won't lose the beat if you just keep clapping your hands...

So...I was uploading the pictures from our trip... and I got a little carried away. There's music and subtitles.** Picasa is pretty cool. I must say we weren't very good at taking pictures. We did that thing I always try not to do. Take a lot of pictures of buildings. Those aren't really good for framing!

Still those pictures are just a hint of what we loved about Savannah. Like you can walk down the street with any adult beverage of your choice in hand, as long as it's in a plastic cup.

It makes you feel like a rebel and makes vacation kinda fun!
We, of course, only indulged in the evenings but we saw people fully embracing the to-go cup in the middle of the morning!

The other cool thing is the SCAD. Having young, artistic types running around the city in their hipster gear gives a historic place a unique, artsy vibe. And brings in good music!

The Wilco show at the Johnny Mercer Theater was amazing--they played for more than 3 hours! They never disappoint.
(Even at your 9th concert of theirs.)

And after we met and bonded with a great couple from Jacksonville, FL and hung out a bit--we decided to try and score some tickets to the sold out She & Him show with them.(as I hoped) We managed to get two seats... and it was great!

We ate more southern comfort food than I care to remember...but Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House was our favorite... The fried chicken! The mac-and-cheese! The greens! Yummy!

All and all--great trip, great company, great city!

**the little movie slideshow isn't as clear as it is on my Picasa site! Bear with me!

Ahh, Home. Let me go home...Home is wherever I'm with you....

Well, we're back and we fell in love with Savannah!

There are so many photos and things I want to share here. But alas, Matt's home early and it's time for Lost!

It'll just have to wait.

Until tomorrow...

XOXO

Keep the car running...

I've already discovered one of the joys of taking a road trip! I call it "the extra shoe bag". That's right. Not an extra pair--an entire BAG of shoes! ( plus a few purses... and a hat...)
Threw them in just in case. Because I can. And no airline is going to weigh the extra bag of shoes, and charge me for the extra bag of shoes. I like it!

Well, not these. Not very good for walking all around Savannah. (But cute)

See you Thursday, Wilco!

And maybe Paula will be there handing out biscuits to us!

And we'll also sit where Forrest sat! Cheesy photos forthcoming.

See y'all next week! Off to be a peach :)

Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph, Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you...**

Shake it like a Polaroid picture...

For some time now, I've really wanted a Polaroid camera. There's something so cool about the instant gratification it provides and that white border just gives your pictures such a nostalgic feel. Kind of romantic and cool in a vintage-y way.  Plus, it is a true snapshot of a moment. Nowadays you can delete those not-so-perfect-pictures and sometimes those are the best. I've been tempted to buy an old one on e-Bay but this maybe my answer...Oh, honey.....

Very 'Penny Lane' in Almost Famous

Perhaps love...

39 years ago was a very important day for the Nelson family... the wedding of my parents--Alan and Audrey!

Nearly four decades later and still so in love... what an amazing example! Happy Anniversary! What could be better to mark the occasion than a little John Denver. (As my mom would say "John Denver, my very favorite!") Now, don't go getting all teary eyed at the sight of John Deutschedorf (his real name) alive in this video with Placido** Domingo circa 1980.

** For the record, when we were little we hated it when she played this song... and we called him "Pathetic Placido", (said with a lisp--we were strange little children)

Georgia on my mind...

Why is it right before you get some well-deserved time off things always seem to get so hectic? Is your to-do list suddenly miles long because you actually have many tasks to complete... or does it just feel that way because you have a big deadline looming and on the other side is... ahhh....vacation! In my case, definitely both!

The family truckster of Vacation fame

In one week, the hubby and I are taking a little road trip to Savannah, Georgia. Loading up the family truckster a la the Griswolds.

It is during the Savannah Music Festival and we will be seeing my FAVORITE band of all-time Wilco. Yes, again. This our 9th time (10th if you count that we've seen the lead singer solo.)
Here we are nerding out while getting Jeff Tweedy's autograph after a Louisville concert

And me with Glenn Kotche, the drummer & my other husband.
(Just kidding, dear!)

As we once heard a fellow fan say at a show in Indianapolis** while waiting in line for beer, "These boys will rock your face off!" It is a sold-out show so I'm most certain they will....

This will be our first extended road trip so good music will be a must--as always!

Now Bob Dylan has a show on Sirius XM (I don't have satellite radio.. but somehow I know about these things?). It is called Theme Time Radio Hour in which all his shows have a music theme.

I often create playlists in this same vein... and call them Lindsay's Theme Time Radio Hour. Let me tell you, it takes some effort. And yes, by admitting this I realize I'm admitting to being quite a dork! I love a theme. (I am my mother's daughter!)

Matt and I were discussing a "Georgia" theme playlist and we actually came up with a pretty good one, pretty quickly!
(Beginning of course with Ray Charles....although we also decided it also kinda conjures up the opening to the show Designing Women...pretty sure  that show was in Atlanta so we should be safe from any theme tours in Savannah...)

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

Oh, Suzanne!

**(The same show, mind you, where we were in the very front row during an especially muggy, mosquito-y summer's night  and Jeff Tweedy, the lead singer, borrowed my bug spray--and I, upon throwing the bottle like a girl, hit it right into his rather expensive guitar. And he, upon throwing it back, hit me right in the "cleavage".  He then proceeded to apologize by saying "Didn't mean to hit you in the cleavage... but that's for pegging my guitar!"  into the microphone.... in front of the whole crowd. I do have a bootleg of the show and you can hear the whole thing. Also, our picture was on the Indianapolis Star's website....great night!)
I'm yelling my signature concert "Owww!"
Not seen in photo: Reed... making his way back to his seat. As seen next to Matt.

La Vie En Rose

Posted by Picasa
So...I finally figured out how to create a photo collage via Picasa. This was my husband-works-on-Sunday-and-it-is-gray-and-rainy-out-project. I decided to choose a french theme because we can all use some francais in our lives... tres bien!

Plus, I think now that this is complete I'm going to go hit up the redbox and rent Coco Before Chanel starring Audrey Tautou (of Amelie fame.. one of my favorite movies of all time!)

Au revoir!

Audrey Tautou as Coco Chanel

Edith Piaf's La Vie En Rose will make you feel more french than a baguette!

I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world...

If they didn't cost $75 bucks each, I'd consider buying a Mad Men Barbie. Yes. My very own Don Draper.

You can pick a Joan Holloway, Roger Sterling, Don or Betty Draper. Read more here.

I also enjoy News Anchor Barbie, described as having "a flair for journalism and power pink"! Ha.

It is apparently Barbie's 125th profession. She's got skills. Not sure she could really get around in the field in those shoes though.

C'mon on Barbie, let's go party....**

**Beware if you play this video, you'll never get this song out of your head!

They say it's your birthday... it's my birthday, too yeah

I will use this post to pay tribute to my darling (emphasis for sarcasm)  brothers.. born March 11th--Reed.. and Drew--March 12th
Happy Birthday! Because your birthdays were so close together, I used to get presents too so I wouldn't be left out. I think we should bring that concept back.

I did not get to post my tribute to Reed yesterday due to technical issues that have now been resolved! The joy of a belated tribute is that the celebration goes beyond one day... that is why I rarely send gifts and cards on time. Good philosophy, no?

First, I will begin with my favorite picture ever of Reed. This is him at 3-and-a-half years old inspired by Ben Kingsley in Gandhi. He's taking a sacred vow.

Reed Nelson's Gandhi

Ben Kingsley's Gandhi

I keep the Reed picture in our side table drawer in the family room so from time to time I can get it out and be amused. It is so flippin' cute.

Reed--if you read this--I hope you know how glad I am that you returned Louisville. You have excellent taste in music and are an all-around-great guy! (Even though when you were born I wished you were a girl.) You have a lot of exciting things coming up.. and it will be a great last year of your twenties :)

Drew can be thankful I don't have any embarrassing pictures of him to post.  Just this cute one of him and adorable Blake!

Drew--Happy Birthday! As I already told you, you are an old man now--Blake's old man! :)
 The Old Man

He's lucky to have you. I can't wait for you guys to visit.. it's not too far down I-65! So much to look forward in this year, too. It's going to be a good one.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!  A TOAST TO YOU....

As our mother** once said in bar, "Here's to those that wish us well and those who don't can go to hell!"

**Yes, it happened Audrey was in a bar. I believe it was a Delta Chi parents weekend. I know. We were all shocked.

Remember... the llama always watching.

I'll just keep it to myself, in the sun, in the sun...

This has been everywhere lately but I can't help but post it! It is the cutest video. (Click the little four arrow box to watch it in full screen mode.)

I just love Zooey Deschanel (and M. Ward. They = She & Him.) She makes you want to buy a vintage dress and cut some bangs... and after this video.. maybe hula hoop in the backyard.

I also like this track "Thieves".

She & Him are playing in Savannah when we're there...hmmm.......

You're gonna fly away, glad you're going my way... I love it when we're cruisin' together...**

Ok. So I'll admit it. A while ago, I signed up for GOOP. If you haven't heard of GOOP, it is an email "newsletter" from Gwyneth Paltrow. She shares recipes, suggests restaurants, shops (I don't know if all of us are really Gwyneth's price point...but she does give a variety, at least), fashion, "hip" causes, etc.

It's sort of a strange concept. You're like sure--Oscar winner, weird-namer of children, rock star wife/celebrity--I'll take your advice! (I just choose to ignore the over-the-top, detox diet drinks she sometimes shares. Eww. I don't have any movie premieres coming up. I'm good. )

Anyways, one of the most recent editions gave you a video of her trainer Tracy Anderson performing what Gwyneth calls her Iron Man 2 arm workout. And she tells us that she does it everyday. Even her hotel. On location. Fancy.

(An aside: If you also rot your brain out like I do with the occasional US Weekly or In Touch, you'll most definitely see something about Tracy Anderson. Like Gwyneth and Madonna to-ing and fro-ing from their posh gym in London to work out with her...)

You can check it out here

Gwyneth advises us it will really help with the "batwing" problem. Yeah, pretty sure she's never experienced the arm-wave waggle.. also known as "Oprah's On!!"

I haven't tried said workout. It looks a little embarrassing, quite frankly. (But you must admit Tracy's pretty buff--you could do worse to workout like her, right?) I don't think if Matt was home, I would attempt this!

Which brings me to this video, which for some reason I could not embed. But here's a link.

A comedian on Videogum goes for it, in a white crop top, no less.
Yikes.. but entertaining!
( It's sort of supposed to be a parody of the movie Sliding Doors with Gwyneth Paltrow. If you don't know that movie, it might seem a little bizarre)

**Ok, one last video (with foreign lyrics no less, for a little international flav-ah) for this post. It's become my  schtick since I started blogging to use song lyrics for each post title. So I'm kinda proud of this one because what comes to mind for this rambling, random post on Gwyneth Paltrow and her workout? Well, Gwyneth singing in her movie Duets, of course. (BTW, a movie I remember renting and not finishing. It's that bad.) From what I do remember, it's about karaoke and finding her dad, played by Huey Lewis.(See above point.) At the end, ( I guess, I never really saw it!)... they sing Cruisin' by Smokey Robinson and thus providing me with a post title! And goodnight....

You walked into the party, like you were walking onto a yacht...

I bought the hubby a record player for Christmas and since then we've been buying vinyl like crazy! One night I mentioned that I'd like to get this Carly Simon record--I really love You're So Vain. I was describing the album to him. It's the one where Carly looks a little chilly. (although very chic in that 1972 way..) A day or two later, Matt came home with the album.

That's the great thing about records. It cost him like $3 or $4 bucks. I probably wouldn't go buying it on itunes... but it's fun to have the whole thing on vinyl.

Since we've had the record player--we've been trolling all kinds of places for records. There is something to be said for thumbing through the stacks of albums. It is much more satisfying that looking through CD's (which most people don't do today really...) or downloading from itunes... which is speedy but not really very exciting at all.

We've also noticed that it makes you listen differently. You put it on and the needle makes its way through the whole album. You can't skip tracks or zone out, because you also have to take time to flip it over. New or old music--it makes you really hear what you are listening to.. and you can't beat the occasional crackle and warble of the vinyl...

Plus, the packaging, the cover art, the liner notes...and for the most part they are cheap!

But my favorite thing on the older albums is when someone has written on the cover. We've noticed cute little address stickers, signatures with a flourish... It makes you wonder who used to own it... and when and where.. they too were listening.

Records also encourage variety. Here are our most recent purchases:

1) The Best of The Band
2) Double Fantasy-John Lennon and Yoko Ono (unfortunately a lot of Yoko)
3) INXS-Kick ( a Lindsay pick--one of the first tapes I remember having--it was a controversial buy--because of the song Devil Inside. Mom had to be assured by my uncle that it was okay. Yes, that happened, Mom. Maybe 6th grade?)
4) Roxy Music-Avalon
5) The Byrds Greatest Hits
6) Joanna Newsom-Have One on Me ( new music--and sooo good. Unique. Random fact: she is dating Andy Samberg**)
7) Sarah Vaughan-The Divine One (selected by Matt following this post. How sweet!)

...Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself ** gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner....

**The rest of the first verse of You're So Vain... I never knew what the heck gavotte was.. until now.
I always thought it said "go by"...

Go ask Alice, when's she's ten feet tall...

Cue up the Jefferson Airplane.

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland opens today. I think this might be a renter but I love all the Alice themed-EVERYTHING.. that is everywhere now! I must say, to me Alice is a blonde and she looks sort of brunette-ish in this movie. That just doesn't work.

A great article with great images on the movie's looks

Designers created special windows with an Alice theme at the Parisian department store Le Printemps. Although the white rabbit head kinda freaks me out ...

This blog has a really cool look at Alice the icon, complete with some amazing, fashion-y photos

Flaxen-haired Alice. As it should be.

Sleep on the train to Tokyo, google yourself when you get home

It always seems like the last song you hear before you get out of the car is the one that is stuck in your head all day. Today, for me it was Orange Shirt** by Discovery.

Discovery is the side project of the keyboardist of Vampire Weekend, Rostam Batmanglij (do you think his last name is made up? Batman-glij , his poor wife: Mr. & Mrs. Batmanglij. Of course, he's probably pretty loaded. Vampire Weekend is very popular.. I digress...) and Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles. I'm glad it was the ear worm song of the day because it is funky and upbeat and the sun was SHINING so everyone was in a good mood all around town.

But I'm not done with this post yet. Oh no. You just play Discovery, whilst checking out these little on-line gems I ran across....

(Do you ever find something funny but you're by yourself? I hate that! You look around and.. no one.. just you chuckling... alone. This happened to me several times today. I'm losing it. )

First, the best sign EVER!

A New Orleans club decides to ban Jersey Shore fashions.
And I use the term "fashions" loosely here.
I love how it goes on to detail which brands are out.
(That means you, bro. Yes, you in the Ed Hardy shirt.)

Secondly,  A History of Obama Feigning Interest in Mundane Things
The comments in the slideshow are hi-larious...

**Hopefully, not the shirt that inspired the song...
